History

JoJo’s Café and Acqua Viva are located on the Nedlands Pier once home to The Nedlands Baths.  This building is now heritage listed by the National Trust.

Officially opened on 9 February 1909 by Western Australia's first premier, Sir John Forrest, The Nedlands Baths became the focal point for thousands of visitors to the Nedlands Foreshore, many arriving by trams from Perth and Subiaco.

Nicknamed "Naughty Neddies", for the undocumented activities in the segregated baths, the foreshore area was used by many Perth residents as a family recreation spot for fishing, swimming, camping and sailing.

Horace Samson and his family operated the baths from 1926 to 1942 teaching many Perth children to swim, using inventions such as balsa wood kick boards and rubber inner tubes, forerunners of today’s plastic kick boards and water wings.

Segregated by wooden fences in the river, young girls and boys paid a penny to enter and learn their swimming skills before showering in the octagonal pavilions located at each end of the jetty. One of the original octagonal structures remains and now houses the Acqua Viva on the Swan while JoJo’s Café is housed at the opposite end of the pier.

The historic venue was purchased by current owners Umberto Tinelli and his family in 2004 and they undertook a landmark renovation of the building.

Jojo’s Café has been fully refurbished and provides a delightful venue for any meal while the innovative renovation by the Tinelli family saw the birth of Acqua Viva on the Swan. The dedicated function centre embraces the views of the Swan River and parklands while creating a unique dining experience.
